Blood tests, urine tests, and other types of lab work help providers diagnose illnesses and monitor the effects of medications and other treatments. They are valuable tools that can identify the cause of your symptoms or make sure the medication you are taking is working as it should. At Physicians Now Urgent Care and Walk-In Clinic, we perform several laboratory tests to help you manage your health.

What is a CBC blood test?

The complete blood count, or CBC blood test, is a screening tool for anemia, inflammation, infection, and other medical problems. This test evaluates the number of white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets in your blood. It also provides information about the amount of hemoglobin in your red blood cells. The CBC is also used to make sure people are healthy enough to undergo surgery or other medical procedures.

What are Metabolic panels?

The basic metabolic panel and comprehensive metabolic panel are very useful tools for determining how well the kidneys and liver are functioning, identifying electrolyte imbalances, and diagnosing other disorders. The basic metabolic panel determines the amount of sodium, chloride, potassium, carbon dioxide, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, and glucose in the blood. BUN and creatinine are metabolic waste products filtered out of the blood by the kidneys.

The comprehensive metabolic panel includes the seven components of the basic metabolic panel, but it also checks the amount of calcium, albumin, bilirubin, total protein, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase, and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in your blood. Alkaline phosphatase, AST, and ALT are liver enzymes, so the test can determine how well your liver is functioning. The amount of BUN, creatinine, chloride, carbon dioxide, potassium, and sodium in your blood is an indicator of how well your kidneys function.

What do you mean by Clotting tests?*

Your blood contains several substances that cause it to clot when you get a cut or other injury. Clotting tests help determine if you are at risk for blood clots or bleeding disorders. If you take a blood thinner such as heparin or warfarin, clotting tests are used to monitor your progress. If you have an abnormal test result, you might have to increase or decrease the dosage of your medication to prevent clotting or bleeding problems.

What is a Lipid panel test?*

A lipid panel is a useful tool for determining your risk of developing heart disease or stroke. The test determines your total cholesterol level and gives a breakdown of how much of that cholesterol is carried by low-density lipoprotein and how much is carried by high-density lipoprotein. Cholesterol is a waxy substance that can stick to the walls of the arteries, reducing blood flow and increasing your risk of a heart attack. The lipid panel also provides information about your triglyceride level. High triglycerides also increase your risk of developing heart disease or having a heart attack or stroke.
