Why Choose Dr. Chinedum Olisemeka, DO, for Strep Throat Treatment?
Viruses are one of the most common reasons for a sore throat, this may lead to a diagnosis of strep throat. Strep throat is an infection in the throat and the tonsils which are caused by a bacteria called group A Streptococcus.
Group A strep lives in the nose and throat and easily can spread to others. The infection can easily be spread by someone coughing or sneezing, which then creates small droplets that contain the bacteria to spread.
People can easily get ill if they:
• Breathe in these respiratory droplets
• Touch something with the droplets on it, then proceed to touch their nose or mouth
• Drink some of the same glass or eat from the same plate as the individual that is sick
• Touch any sores on the skin that is caused by group A streptococcus.
Strep Throat is known as an infection which is caused by the bacteria streptococcus pyogenes which is commonly seen among children aged 5 to 15 years old and usually during the colder winter months and sometimes early spring.
The common symptoms seen in individuals who have strep throat include:
• Sore throat
• Pus on the tonsils
• Difficulty swallowing
• Fever
• Swollen glands
Many often complain of a headache, or stomach ache and may develop a red sandpaper-looking rash on the body.
With strep being so contagious, it is easy for many to become sick with strep by just being near an individual who has strep throat. Strep is spread through tiny respiratory droplets that are released when the sick individual sneezes or coughs or if you touch or put something to your nose, eyes, and mouth that may have been touched by the sick individual.
There are risk factors that may increase your risk of a strep throat infection:
• Younge age
• Strep throat occurs commonly in young children.
Time of year
• Strep throat can occur any time of the year; however, it tends to circulate during the winter and spring months.
Visit Physicians Now Urgent Care and Walk-In Clinic to get an examination for strep throat by an experienced and specialized team of doctors. We will be able to evaluate, diagnose, and often offer treatment options for you if you are showing similar signs of strep throat.
A test will be offered for strep throat cases, in which a sample will be taken from the back of the throat. Two cotton-tipped swabs will be swiped over the back of the throat and tonsils, this is where the bacteria live when you have strep throat. This does not hurt but may feel uncomfortable and have the feeling of wanting to gag.
If a positive result comes back from your strep throat test, an antibiotic prescription will be offered as a treatment for your strep throat illness. Usually, you will start to feel better within a day or two after starting the antibiotics. Depending on each individual, some may have certain side effects from the antibiotics, like diarrhea and a rash; these side effects will eventually subside once the antibiotics are finished.
It is very important to remember to continue the use of your antibiotic medication until it is finished as per your doctor’s orders for it to reach its full effect. If it is not used correctly, it can lead to some bacteria developing resistance to antibiotics. Resistance can then make the strep throat infection harder to treat, or not treatable at all in some cases.
Note any allergies you may have to your doctor so they can be fully aware when prescribing the antibiotic medication.
